The floor plan of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg's stage forms the basis of my artistic design. The technical layout is a set of rules composed of right angles, straight lines and strict geometry. It is the foundation and, at the same time, the constraint of every stage designer, here it becomes an emblem of „Der Prozess“.
At the beginning of the play, the image of the floor plan is presented to the audience as a bright, clear symbol. In the course of the evening, it transforms into an obscure, tangled system of lines, that only pretends to follow functioning and clear principles.
This raises the question whether the protagonist Josef K. has fallen victim to a nightmare.
The floor plan has a direct relationship to the theater, the building in which the audience is present. Its image gives the spectators a precise piece of information that would normally be unavailable to them. At the same time it blurs into a complete illusion, as if in a dream. Becoming increasingly omnipresent in the course of the story, the image of the floor plan appears directly and indirectly in multiple guises and translations. Stage technology is used in an illusionist, aestheticized fashion.
